The 4C's of Diamonds
First 'C' – Carat Weight. The exact weight of a stone is determined by weighing it on precise scales, or if the stone is set in jewelry, then special formulas are used. The weight of diamonds is in carat, where 1 CT = 200 milligrams.
Second 'C' – Color. The color scale of GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the world standard in the jewelry industry. It begins with the color D (colorless) and with increasing presence of color continues until the letter Z. Nearly all stones have a presence of color or shades of colors of various intensities. Completely colorless diamonds are extremely rare.
Third 'С' – Clarity. Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rather rare and hence are very valuable. The scale begins with FL (flawless) and ends with I3 (included).
Fourth 'C' – Cut. Cut affects many aspects of how the stone looks but the three main attributes are: fire, brilliance and scintillation. The traditional cut has 58 facets in a round shaped diamond. The quality of cut is the deciding factor when it comes to beauty and attraction of a stone. Cut is graded based on characteristics of shape, quality of cut and finish.
Different grading systems are used worldwide. The most widely spread being the GIA grading scale. Another known systems are the IDC and HRD.
